EVA SMEREKANYCH
Eva Smerekanych is a sculptor based in Bellevue, WA. She specializes in sculpting with polymer clay at a miniature scale. Her work explores approaches to the human body in a range of contexts, from hyper-realistic miniatures to anthropomorphic furniture.
Eva is inspired by the absurdity of the human experience, and approaches her work with a touch of humor and an obsessive attention to detail. She has a passion for hand-made craft, and can typically be found hunched over her desk with a needle-point tool in hand, squinting at a piece of clay on the tip of her finger.
In her early adolescence, Eva thought she had everything figured out. Now in her mid-twenties, Eva realizes that she was wrong. As she grapples with the existential dread of being 24, she uses that anxiety to push her work further, providing glimpses into her mental states in her pieces, from the confusion and anxieties animated in her claymation series Stop [E]motion to the self-doubt brutally targeted in the interactive piece The Eye of Truth to the solace and comfort she finds in the ethereal worlds of her favorite albums, brought to life in her series Pop Sculpture.
Eva received her Bachelors degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she double majored in Art & Design and Artificial Intelligence. While studying at MIT, she developed an interest in bringing her sculptures to life with movement and interactivity, which has taken her sculptural work into the four-dimensional domain of film.
Looking to the future, Eva plans to continue exploring “four-dimensional sculptures”, finding new ways to bring her work to life via methods like software integration, animation, and mechanical elements, finding joy in creating tiny vibrant worlds.
